The Center for Safe Solutions, a unit of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences, is committed to supporting science-based initiatives that will reduce drug trafficking, money laundering, firearms trafficking, drug-related violence and gang activity with a specific focus on Maryland, Washington, DC and Virginia. CSS supports policy and decision makers and other stakeholders by providing research and criminal intelligence that enables them to make more informed decisions.

CSS is funded entirely through external grants and, as such, is uniquely positioned to assist public safety and community organizations with opportunities to obtain grants and other external funding that they may not otherwise have resources to pursue.


To expand relationships with government and nongovernment organizations, communities, private clients, and institutions of higher learning nationwide to provide the highest quality support for public safety and offer the best technical assistance and training.


To partner with clients to solve their most important and complex problems. CSS will do this by providing its clients with the highest quality of managerial, operational and technical assistance, and training.


  • Improve efforts to combat drug trafficking and drug abuse
  • Develop innovative approaches to reduce violent crime
  • Conduct research on drug and money laundering organizations and gangs
  • Provide strategic, operational and tactical criminal intelligence to our clients
  • Offer internships and paid positions to college students
  • Develop new and expand upon existing collaborative relationships with other departments and colleges within the University
  • Seek additional grants and other external funding to support its goals
